President John Evans Atta Mills has visited areas affected by floods in Accra, to share the grief of hundreds of people who have been displaced by the floods.
He also consoled families of those who perished in the floods.
The floods follow an overnight downpour in the national capital which lasted almost seven hours. At the time of the visit, five people were reported to have lost their lives.
The President was conducted round the affected areas by the Minister of the Interior, Dr Benjamin Kunbuor and the Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Kofi Portuphy.
President Mills visited the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Odawna, Avenor, Alajo, Kissieman, Domi Pillar One, all in Accra, which were the most affected by the floods.
Addressing the affected communities, President Mills said he was there to demonstrate his concern and also to sympathise with them "in this trying moment."
He assured them that the government would do everything in its power to bring the situation under control.
He commended the NADMO, City Engineers Unit of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the security services for their swift response to the disaster and appealed to the affected to remain calm as efforts were being made by the NADMO and the other service providers to respond to their needs at their doorsteps.
President Mills expressed concern about building on water-ways and indiscriminate disposal of waste and stressed the need for more discipline in that respect.
He said the authorities did not seek pleasure in the demolition of buildings sited on water-ways, explaining that the attitude and actions of pepertrators necessitated those actions.
He, therefore, called for a non-partisan approach to solving the disaster that had confronted the whole nation.
Dr Kunbuor advised people not to dare cross the flood waters and thanked residents who sacrifised to support others to protect lives and property.
