A leading Ghanaian academic has said that universities in Ghana are currently providing academic excellence comparable to those provided by UK universities. Professor Kwasi Asabre ameyaw, Vice- Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba, (UEW) made this assertion in an exclusive interview with He said Ghana universities are now well equipped and well-planned to provide the same standard of education prevailing in the UK universities. “We have the infrastructure and a quality assurance mechanism which is on equal level with those in the UK”, he said. Professor Ameyaw therefore urged Ghanaians in the UK and the wider diaspora to consider enrolling themselves or their wards in universities in Ghana. He added that apart from the good quality of education on offer there is also the opportunity for them to broaden their horizon and outlook on Ghanaian and African culture. “You will not only have access to good education, you also experience the variety of new cultures”. On the prospects of UEW, Professor Ameyaw said the institution has made great strides from its humble beginnings with 1000 humble students to top other universities with almost 60,000students. According to the Vice-Chancellor the development of the universities accelerated rapidly since his tenure began in 2007. The UEW now has the capacity to enrol foreign students and a new faculty centre for African studies designed to deal with all aspects of African cultures to be established. Professor Ameyaw is due in UK this week in the company of his fellow Vice-Chancellors for a conference with Africans. “All aspects of university improvement have been put in place. Standards have been raised high and infrastructure expanded” he added.
