Is your extended family a burden? PDF Print E-mail

May 15 is UN International Day of Families - in Africa, the extended family is often as important as the immediate, "nuclear" family.

The extended family might step in to help raise your children and be consulted on important decisions.

But family can also be a burden when they drain your emotional resources and interfere with your life.

Do you consult your extended family on big decisions? Is the choice between immediate family or extended family? Does family bring with it a burden or support? Is the traditional African family unit crumbling?

We'd love to read your views. Please add your comments below.

Most people in the USA care nothing about family ties. I can't speak for other cultures but it amazes me that people of African heritage in other countries actually believe in and lookout for their families. As a result I want and am planing a tour to see as much of Africa as I can.
