MISS NIGERIA UK 2004

Miss Nigeria UK Beauty Pageant and Gala night is annually organized in memory of Natasha Isimeme Ojie the organizer’s daughter whose life was truncated by the cold hands of death, (malignant brain tumour) at the tender age of five and a half years. This event seeks to highlight the beauty and brains inherent the Nigeria young women. The beauty pageant is an offshoot of Natasha’s dream of being a beauty queen, thus, in her memory the event is organized.

Voice of Africa Radio was reliably informed by the organiser that, past proceeds from this event had gone to worthy causes championed in the United Kingdom by Miss Nigeria UK. An earlier beneficiary of this charity includes the great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children where Natasha spent her last days.

And that the Natasha Ojie foundation, had taken up a cause to educate our women particularly in Nigeria on the danger of cancer. To do this, they seek to help the women make an informed judgement about breast cancer, by educating them that the disease, if detected early can be cured. Further, they aimed to make them understand breast cancer symptoms, treatment options and side effects. In line with these objectives, the first phase of this awareness campaign was launched on the 20th Nov.2003 at the Nicon Hilton Hotel Abuja.

On the 27th November 2004, guests flocked to witness a spectacle of 13 beautiful young Nigerian contestants struggling to be crowned Miss Nigeria UK 2004. This event started at 9pm, prominent guests like John Fashanu, Vice President Aikhomu, Senators, serving Ambassadors, celebrities and guests from far and wide were all seated and treated to a 3-course buffet meal, as specified on the tickets for this event.

The show kicked off with the all sexy, all elegant, all beautiful Nigerian ladies performing a choreographed traditional dance to the sounds of Femi Kuti. Then the bikini section came with thunderous applause from the crowd as the contestant appeared according to the state they represent. Contestant no.7 Doreen Belonwu who apparently had come to this contest with her entire church congregation, and a vast array of family and friends, could not control their admiration and support as they were clapping and shouting ‘go girl’.

At 11:45pm to speed up the event the organizers decided to eliminate the process of asking each contestant an intelligence question after each round and opted to ask only one question at the evening wear and the judges argued amongst them selves to come to a decision. The six finalists were rushed on stage; seven appeared and resulted in one having to be pulled off to thunderous applause and side splitting laughter!

At that same point of time three were selected at haste with the winner being Doreen Ogechi Belonwu, Izevbuwa Amadasun as 1st runner up and Priscilla Ikpoh as 2nd runner up.

In conclusion the performance of the young ladies, their beauty, their dresses and some of the performances by various artists on the night was fantastic and a delight to watch. The entire show in itself was really great viewing and we can only look forward to seeing more beautiful faces next year. Congratulations Prince Ojie and good luck!
